Designated Driver a Must

The Auto Channel recently reported that AAA reminded individuals who will be going out on Halloween to have a designated driver. Although the said occasion has been known as festivities for children, grownups nowadays are joining the festivities with parties of their own. And on these parties, alcoholic drinks will no doubt be served. Thus, to make sure that everyone gets home safely, a designated driver should be appointed before going to Halloween parties. The National Retail Federation reported that 28 percent of grownups in the country are planning to throw or attend a part this coming Halloween.

Halloween is the third riskiest day in terms of traffic accidents. With a lot children going from house to house trick-or-treating, the danger posed to them is high. Children tend to get excited on Halloween while out of their house sometimes would run into the streets. This could lead to an accident. Combine that with a drunk driver and the result may be fatal. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration or the NHTSA reported that half of all traffic fatalities on Halloween are related to drunk driving.

Jack Coleman, the director of AAA Traffic Safety Programs, pointed out that Halloween should be fun for both children and grownups. And it would be better if it is kept that way by avoiding the risk of accidents due to irresponsible driving while under the influence of alcohol.

“Halloween is a fun time for most, but the excitement of the night can easily cause people to forget about their safety,” said Coleman. “It’s essential that partygoers remember to select a designated driver prior to drinking during Halloween festivities. And, it’s important all motorists show extra caution on Halloween. Slowing down and watching for trick-or-treaters can help ensure children make it home safely.”

AAA advises motorists to never drive if they have been drinking. A designated driver is the safest bet. With one sober person driving the vehicle, the chance of getting into an accident is slimmer compared to when a person who has been drinking is behind the wheel. In this case, even reliable parts like the Audi timing belt will have no use. AAA also advises those who will be drinking on Halloween to either call a cab or a sober friend to take him or her home. If a safe ride home cannot be found, it is safer if one should just stay where he or she is until she or he gets sobered up.

If you are the one throwing a party for your friends, AAA advises you to make sure that none of your guests arrive already impaired due to alcohol. Also make sure that none of them will be driving home while under the influence of alcohol. It would even be more helpful if the host will ask his or her guests to have a designated driver if they have not appointed one yet.

When driving, motorists should be extra careful while driving through neighborhoods. AAA advises drivers to drive preferably five miles per hour less than the posted speed limit. These tips offered by AAA is not only applicable for the Halloween but for everyday of the year. With responsible drivers, the country’s roads will be much safer.
